The byzantine scales have 72 particles like western scales, but are structured differently and are harder to sing. In western scales you only meet tones (12 particles) and half-tones (6 particles). In byzantine scales a tone may be major (12 particles), minor (10 particles), minim (8 particles), half-tone (6 particles), maxim (14 particles) or even hypermaxim (16 particles). Not to mention sharps and flats which can be 2,4 6 particles (not only 6 like in western music)
